I was eleven. We lived inland, south of Jacksonville. I remember pushing towels under the front door trying to keep the rain from coming in. It was a bit of a lark with the rain and wind and not having to go to school.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04760605364452080554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1887258513611422728.post-10598418852699486962014-08-13T20:30:54.824-06:002014-08-13T20:30:54.824-06:00Hurricane Hazel October 1954. But almost all traces of Donna were wiped out by other storms, including Sandy. It is interesting to see the huge areas owned by Hazel, Hugo and Opal.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1887258513611422728.post-34126845360072422462014-08-13T12:09:52.142-06:002014-08-13T12:09:52.142-06:00Hurricane Hazel floods my memory. We kids were all playing on the street as usual on a summer evening, when the wind and rain suddenly began howling. We all bolted toward our respective porches. On my way, I stopped, held back (I don't know how) for just a second, when a major tree branch fell a foot or two in front of me. What if??? The next morning some of those old maple trees lay on the sidewalk, totally uprooted.
