Audio: What Chicago's Archbishop Cupich said about homosexuality and Holy Communion


Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago — who is participating in the Synod of the Family at Pope Francis’ personal invitation — said at a press scrum in the Vatican press office this afternoon that the conscience is "inviolable" and that he believes divorced and remarried couples could be permitted to receive the sacraments, if they have "come to a decision" to do so "in good conscience" - theological reasoning that he indicated in response to a follow-up question would also apply to gay couples.

  5. After being mentored by Cardinal George, I bet the newly ordained, Bishop Robert Barron thanks the Lord daily for being rescued from the authority of Archbishop Cupic who, I'm sure, will make fundamental undermining of his predecessor an essential part of his ministry.,

  6. So what happens after the Synod - does Archbishop Cupich return to his diocese and continue to dissent and lead others away from the Truth - or does his sign a Pledge of Fideliity?

  7. If Cupich were a student in my RCIA class I would not be able to recommend that he be received into the Catholic Church.

  8. This is a blessing in disguise; the wolves in sheep's clothing are revealing their true selves here (instead of subtly and secretly wreaking havoc upon the Church), and soon -- very soon -- they will be dealt with accordingly.

  9. One of the books published in English in the U. S. A. of Pope Francis's homilies, retreats, published writings is entitled "Open Minds, Open Hearts". I truly believe that his hermeneutic is, in continuity with the emeritus Bishop of Rome, Pope Benedict XVI, the hermeneutic of encounter, of drawing alongside and advocating for the 'lost sheep'. What a marvelous etymological example of that from Archbishop Cupich in the word 'reconciliation'. He is talking about the pastoral practice of drawing alongside meeting people right where they are at, and he specifically says, "helping them to move forward" - that is, not to leave them where they are, but doing what we can to help them come into a living personal encounter with living the fullness of the faith. All of these nasty comments about a shepherd of the catholic Church is unbecoming a catholic Chiristian. Did Jesus Christ condemn the woman at the well for having lived in serial relationships with five people? He did not affirm her error, yet neither did He condemn her; and in drawing alongside her he was able to convert her and she herself went into the town to bring the Gospel to others. I myself love the doctrine and dogma and tradition of the Church as much as anyone, but it is not meant to be a bully club to bat people around the head with to prove our intellectual superiority. When Jesus Christ encountered the Pharisees of His time He told them that it was not insignificant to "tithe mint and cumin" but that it was much more important to pay attention to the weightier aspects of Divine Revelation: discretion (judgement - not in the sense of condemnation, but rather in the sense of pastoral consideration, the wise application of wisdom that takes the human person into account and doesn't consider them simply as the terminus of a moral calculus), and mercy. No one is talking about changing the doctrine of the faith, they are talking about drawing alongside of people and helping to lift them up to get them to where they need to be,

    "until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ, so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming. Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body’s growth and builds itself up in love."

    We are all meant to Incarnate the truth. It isn't enough simply to be able to intellectually articulate it. We must become it. In the hierarchy of "truth" justice gives way to mercy, the application of the truth in love (Veritas in Caritate).

  12. At the same, Christ did say to the woman at the well, "go and sin no more". And he did advise his disciples to "shake the dust off their feet" if they were not welcome in certain places.

  14. What was it Jesus said - he who is sinless throw the first stone ----- and THEN He said to the woman SIN NO MORE. I am a sinner but am I allowed to say to my brother and sister homosexuals - sin no more ? If I really love my brother and sister homosexuals I will tell them homosexual behavior is not only sinful but is proven to shorten your life. The bishop's approach to this problem is incorrect and not REAL (tough) love.

  16. And where is the Holy father in all this? But why would he say anything. For the last 50 years the dissenters and heretics have been molly coddled and now even promoted.
